Cellist Leana Rutt is a thoughtful and compelling performer, recognized across Canada for her artistry as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. Originally from London, Ontario, Leana is currently based in Toronto as the Canadian Opera Company’s associate principal cellist and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal cellist. She has performed on stages as far afield as Yellowknife in Canada and Lucerne in Switzerland, and been a guest artist at festivals such as Toronto Summer Music, Chatter Albuquerque, Music by the Sea (St. Augustine Beach, Florida), Ottawa Chamberfest and Stratford Summer Music. She is a member of the Rosebud String Quartet, whose 2023 debut album of Haydn and Mozart was hailed as “an outstanding disc” (The WholeNote) and “a beautiful, quintessential string quartet performance” (La Scena Musicale). A graduate of McGill University and The Juilliard School, Leana credits her cello teachers Timothy Eddy, Matt Haimovitz, Paul Pulford and Terry Sefton for her musical development.
