Nuu-chah-nulth / Indigenous Arts Educator, Royal Ontario Museum

Professional Development Award

This award will advance J’net Ayayqwayaksheelth’s Indigenous arts leadership role within a mainstream context and build up tactful approaches to create, sustain and maintain long-term systemic impact. Access to an international network of professional peers in training sessions combined with her diverse connections globally and at a grassroots level will strengthen meaningful exchange and idea generation in the arts/education sector.

The long-term benefits to the arts in general include her continued commitment to be an agent of change from the inside out, thereby ensuring collectively that we are not selective but rather inclusive and informed of all of our historical memories. In addition, she intends to find ways to engage Indigenous youth through paid support staff positions, allowing us to build an integral baseline of interest in the next generation of Indigenous museum/arts professionals.

Sasha Ivanochko

Mentorship Award

Sasha Ivanochko will use the Award to undertake a mentorship with Michael Toppings, Executive and Artistic Director of MAI | Montréal, arts interculturels. The mentorship will address the unique and complex management responsibilities associated with holding the dual roles of executive and artistic director. Sasha aims to supplement her knowledge in all aspects of organizational oversight of a mid-size arts organization, paying special attention to acquiring strategies and balance.

What is this prize?

The John Hobday Awards in Arts Management are granted to talented arts managers in Canadian professional arts organizations for professional development or mentoring purposes.

  • The Professional Development and Renewal Award is granted to an outstanding arts manager wishing to take part in a recognized program, seminar or workshop.
  • The Mentorship Award goes to an arts manager who is seeking to acquire different knowledge, experience and skills under the supervision of a mentor in his or her field.

Who created this prize?

These prizes were established with a $1 million donation from the Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation to the Canada Council for the Arts. John Hobday made an enormous contribution to improving the work quality and professionalism of Canadian arts managers by promoting professional development and continuous training and focusing on the profession's importance for the growth and viability of the arts.
